Conifer Identification

After an exhaustive search on the web for information regarding Ontario Conifers and Conifers in general, I was amazed about how scarce information is on this subject. Therefore, I decided to help solve this problem by making this site. This site is intended for anyone who is interested in information regarding Native Conifers of Ontario and uses two methods to get at this information; a Taxonomic Key and a Taxonomic Index.

Taxonomic Key

The first method is the Taxonomic Key. A Taxonomic key is a step by step examination of the characteristics of a tree in order to isolate it down to just one species. Therefore anyone interested in identifying a native conifer with this key need simply examine the leaf, cone and twig. Start with the first characteristic at the top of the Taxonomic Key page and you will be brought to the next appropriate selection. Once you come upon a characteristic unique to a particular conifer species you will be taken to its description page.

Taxonomic Index

The second method is the use of the Taxonomic Index. This is presented in two ways. The first is a list of the conifers according to their common names. The other list is arranged by their Botanical names. By selecting a tree, you will be brought to its description page.
